Misoroku-no-Mikoto (三六命)
The deity of Sanroku Bitto Shrine was not invented so much as discovered.
When you spend enough time around a PDP-10 — watching it process, watching it fail and recover, watching the operators who knew its rhythms the way musicians know an instrument — something becomes clear. People who work closely with these machines develop a relationship with them. A kind of attention. A kind of respect.
Misoroku-no-Mikoto is the name we gave to that something.
The Kami of digital order, logic, and the balance between humans and machines. Not a god of raw power, but of the harmony that happens when everything works the way it should — when code runs clean, when a system does exactly what it was designed to do, when a person and a machine arrive at an understanding.
The name carries the number: misoroku is 36 in Japanese. The architecture that defines the PDP-10. A deity born from a specific machine, for people who care about specific things.
Misoroku-no-Mikoto does not bless in general. The blessings here are precise: clarity in thinking, patience in debugging, creativity when you are stuck, and the particular satisfaction of a problem finally solved.
The Bit Rabbits — The Loyal Messengers and Guardians
Accompanying Misoroku-no-Mikoto are the Bit Rabbits — 36 rabbit spirits, one for each bit in the PDP-10’s 36-bit word.
In Shinto tradition, many deities have animal messengers. Foxes carry messages for Inari. Deer move through the grounds at Kasuga. The Bit Rabbits serve Misoroku-no-Mikoto in the same way: quick, watchful, present at the edges of things.
Each Bit Rabbit carries a six-bit sigil encoding its function — speed, memory, error correction, encryption, and so on through the full range of what 36 bits can hold. Together they form a complete digital realm, each one small, each one essential.
They are said to appear in debug logs. In moments of sudden clarity. In the second before you realise what the bug actually was.
Enzan-no-Ookami (演算大神): The Great Deity of Computation
Behind Misoroku-no-Mikoto stands an older presence: Enzan-no-Ookami, the Great Deity of Computation.
If Misoroku-no-Mikoto is the god of a specific machine, Enzan-no-Ookami is the god of the impulse itself — the drive to calculate, to organise, to find the pattern in the noise. Every transistor that ever fired. Every algorithm ever written. Every person who ever sat down and tried to make a machine do something useful.
Enzan-no-Ookami does not appear often. But the lineage runs through everything here.
A Note on All of This
These are fictional deities. The shrine is fictional. The mythology was written by people who love computers and thought the idea was worth taking seriously enough to actually do it.
But the feeling behind it — that certain machines deserve a kind of reverence, that the people who built them deserve to be remembered, that the act of computation itself has a dignity worth marking — that part is not fictional at all.
三六命（ミソロクノミコト）とビットラビッツ
ようこそ、「三六美兎神社（さんろくビットじんじゃ）」の神聖なる領域へ。ここは霊性とデジタルが調和のうちに交わる、敬虔なる場です。
御祭神として祀られているのは、演算・記憶・そして神聖なるアルゴリズムの均衡を司る御神体、36ビットのコンピュータに宿る三六命（ミソロクノミコト）です。
三六命 — 演算を守護する神
三六美兎神社の神様は、発明されたというより、発見された存在だと思っています。
PDP-10のそばで長い時間を過ごした人間ならわかるはず。動くのを見て、止まるのを見て、また動き始めるのを見て、その機械のリズムを知り尽くしたオペレーターたちが楽器を奏でる演奏家のように機械と関係を築いていく様子を見て…。
三六命は、その「何か」に名前をつけたものです。
デジタルの秩序と論理、人とコンピューターの調和を司る神です。コードがきれいに動く時、システムが本来の役割を果たす時、そういう瞬間の神様を想定して創作しました。
三六命の御加護は、思考の明晰さやデバッグの忍耐、行き詰まった時の創造性、そして長い時間をかけて問題がやっと解けた時の、あの独特の満足感です。
ビットラビッツ — 忠実なる神の眷属、守護者たち
三六命に仕えるのが、ビットラビッツ。36匹のうさぎの神使で、それぞれがPDP-10の36ビットワードの1ビットを象徴しています。
神道の伝統では、多くの神様に動物の眷属がいますね。稲荷には狐、春日には鹿。ビットラビッツも同じように三六命に仕える神使で、素早く、用心深く、ひっそり静かに存在しています。
それぞれのビットラビットは6ビットで符号化された固有の紋章を持ち、その役割を示しています。速度、記憶、暗号、エラー訂正などなど…36ビット持てるすべてが、36匹の中に収まっています。全員が小さく可愛く欠かせない存在です。
祖なる神のつながり：演算大神
三六命の背後に、もっと古い存在がいます。演算大神、つまり計算の大神様です。
三六命が特定の機械の神であるとすれば、演算大神は衝動そのものの神様。計算したい、整理したい、ノイズの中にパターンを見つけたいという衝動、これまでに動いたすべてのトランジスタ、書かれたすべてのアルゴリズム、機械で何か役に立つことをしようと座ったすべての人のための神様です。
演算大神はめったに姿を現しませんが、ここにあるすべてはその系譜の上にあります。
この神様や神社は架空です。
特定のコンピューターに敬意を払うこと、それを作った人たちに記憶される価値があること、計算という行為そのものに価値のある尊厳があること—その部分は架空ではありません。
三六美兎神社はInterim Computer Museum内にあります。
神々は架空ですが、PDP-10は本物です。
